Metronidazole Infusion Therapeutic Indications

Metronidazole is effective in Bacteroides fragilis infections resistant to clindamycin, chloramphenicol and penicillin.Below are its therapeutic indictions

• Bacterial Septicemia caused by Bacteroides species
• Bone and Joint Infections caused by Bacteroides species
• Central Nervous System Infections caused by Bacteroides species
• Endocarditis caused by Bacteroides species

Metronidazole Infusion Side effects

The following side effects are reported for patients after using metronidazole infusion.

• Anorexia.
• Chest pain, tachycardia.
• Confusion, hallucination.
• Erythematous rash, urticaria, dry skin.
• Flattening of T wave on ECG.
• Genital pruritus.
• Insomnia, headache, ataxia, vertigo, incoordination, dizziness.
• Light sensitivity, nystagmus.
• Myalgia.
• Nausea, dry mouth, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, sharp unpleasant metallic taste.
• Pharyngitis, sinusitis.
• Severe neurological disturbances.
• Syncope.
• Tinnitus.

Warnings

• Patients who are allergy to paracetamol should not use this medicine.
• Nitroimidazoles antibiotics have reaction with alcohol, so do not drink alcohol while you are taking metronidazole in order to avoid disulfiram-like reaction.
